Runyenjes is a small but rapidly growing town located about 150 kilometers from Nairobi City in Embu County of Eastern province. It lies on the windward slopes of Mt. Kenya. It is the second largest town in Embu County. The town has a population of about 58,000 people.
Runyenjes town got its name a popular Chief Runyenje of the colonial era who ruled from Thuci River to Sagana in Central Province. Runyenjes is surrounded by small but rapidly growing towns: Kianjokoma, Manyatta, Karurumo, Kigumo, Kathageri, Kanja, Mukuuri, Ena and Gichiche.

Rain fed agriculture is the main economic activity practiced in the area. Small scale agriculture both, small-scale food and cash-crop production, is the major economic activity in Runyenjes and contributes about 70% of incomes. The main food crops grown are maize, beans, yams, cassava, millet, sorghum, bananas, and arrowroot. Domestic livestock of cows, goats, sheep and chicken, is also practiced alongside crop farming.
