Mandera County is located North Eastern part of Kenya and borders Ethiopia to the North, Somalia Republic to the East and Wajir County to the South and South West. It is 1,100km from Nairobi by road. Most of the inhabitants are ethnic Somalis.
Mandera County is prone to draughts with low rainfall most of the year. Daytime temperature is above 30 degrees Celsius and at night they can fall to 20 degrees.
Mandera County being at border with Ethiopia and the unstable Somalia presents the residents with security challenges as hostile attacks often get them in the way of harm.
Access to Mandera from Nairobi is challenge due to security and the road condition s. A bus ticket goes for Ksh 2,500 and may take days to reach Mandera. Within the county, donkey carts serve as the main mode of transport.
